Summary
Yogiri Takatou (
He is a high school student who got transported to another world by a woman called Sion. After being abandoned by his classmates, Yogiri and his new friend Tomochika decide to explore the new world outside, hoping to find a new way back home.
Yogiri's signature power is to instantly kill anyone and anything he desires with a single thought.[1] Despite this seemingly all-powerful ability, he is incapable of achieving his goal of returning home with it, and thus he makes his way through the new world in order to find a way back home. Through the story, however, Yogiri's true nature is slowly unveiled — that of an eldritch horror-type being who, for unknown reasons, manifested itself as Yogiri back in the old world.
Appearance
Yogiri is a teenager with a height of 170cm,[2] with spiky gray hair with two light blue scythe shaped streaks, brown eyes, and a cute/handsome face (according to Tomochika, Mokomoko, and several male classmates). He is not particularly muscular, but is surprisingly athletic and agile when the situation calls for it. When Yogiri used to live in the Institute's facility, he used traditional japanese clothes.
Personality
Yogiri is shown to be a pretty indifferent and apathetic person. He is a man who does not care much about his surroundings or people, as long as it does not involve him or his friends/allies. He likes to play video-games whenever he can, as well as to sleep a lot. Most of the time he is shown to be quite a calm and aloof person, even when in extremely dangerous situations, who considers most things nothing more than a bother. He is quite sure in his capabilities to kill anything, and although he once mentioned that he would not be much surprised if he found something that could survive his power, such a thing has never happened to this day. Yogiri has never once considered himself invincible, and he usually only kills via self-defense.
Despite the nature of his power, Yogiri has standards when it comes to intentionally/actively using his ability. He explicitly notes several times that he does not like to kill indiscriminately and that he doesn't kill someone just because they annoy him. However, if a person is being violent or trying to rob him for example, he kills them. According to him, those are not the kind of things that normal people try to do, and going out of his way to spare someone who is willing to commit those types of crime without a second thought could cause trouble in the future. When Yogiri was asked why he couldn't just kill the space between worlds to get home, he answered that he wasn't willing to kill all the living beings from the worlds in-between just to get home, and would only use such tactic as an absolute last resort.[3]
He seems to like Tomochika in a way, as he always tries to enjoy situations in which he accidentally or unintentionally gets a hold of her body. After the end of Instant Death, Yogiri is shown dating Tomochika in a sequel novel made by Fujitaka that takes place in the same multiverse.[4]
In regards to Yogiri's true form, it's mostly unknown what kind of thought proccess it has. However, it has been shown to protect Yogiri (avatar) from threats that the latter can't deal with, and it ensures that the avatar succeeds on his purpose of fulfilling a human life.[5][6][7]
History
Yogiri was born in a pretty isolated and unknown village hidden in the mountains, outside the reaches of any modern civilization. Ever since it was born, it already had the power to automatically kill any threat to its life. Miss Fox referred to its ability as "the power to make anything and everything disappear"[8]. The cult that ruled said village had the task of containing Lord Okakushi (the name given to Yogiri at the time) and its previous incarnations ever since ancient times, and to prevent it from making any contact with the outside world. At some point, however, the kid saw the people it loved dying right in front of its eyes. The boy couldn't take it and went berserk, losing its mind and killing all of the village's citizens and escaping into the forest/wilderness.[9]
Reinforcements were sent to either contain or kill the child, but it was futile. Those who approached it carelessly, thinking it was only a child, died the moment it saw them. The animals died, the birds died, the insects died. Anything that lay in its path died. It was hollow. No one knew what it wanted. After annihilating the cult hidden in the mountains, it just staggered onward. It was walking around without a goal. Eventually, a Buddhist priest (called Dougen) who belonged to an organization that deals with the supernatural decided to help by approaching Yogiri with no harmful intent and outside its field of vision, and put a headset on Yogiri's ears. A sound began to play from the headset. It was a sort of sutra, which calmed the boy and put him to sleep.[10]
Afterward, Lord Okakushi couldn't be kept at the empty village anymore, and certainly they couldn't just leave him at the mountain. As such, he was brought to a facility made by The Institute, with the intent of containing and taking care of him. They created a space that resembled an underground village. Since Lord Okakushi was used to living in an old-fashioned place, they thought that suddenly thrusting him into the modern world was a bad idea, so the Institute essentially replicated the village he previously lived in. They had to put him in this place so far below sea level to keep the threat to the world that he posed as far from prying eyes as possible[11]. It was around this point that the boy began to be referred to as ΑΩ (Alpha-Omega).[12]
After an unknown period of time, the Institute decided to hire a caretaker that would give ΑΩ a minimum level of education as a Japanese person. Asaka Takatou was chosen for the job. Initially reluctant at first, she accepted the job. When she first met the boy, she realized ΑΩ wasn't that much of a monster as people told her. While it did have a terrifying power, it was still a kid at the end of the day, with real feelings. Asaka got angry and frustrated at herself. She then decided to give ΑΩ a proper name, one that wouldn't be a mere classification. From that point onwards, he would be officially known as "Yogiri Takatou".[13]
In regards to his true form, what is known is that it exists ever since the very beginning of everything[14][15][16]. It's an entity that represents the rule that defines the Ultimate Ensemble (the ultimate collectivity of all multiverses and all possible worlds). It signifies the limit, the end, and the stopper of the Ultimate Ensemble. At some point, it decided to create vessels/avatars at different points in time to interact with the world, with the most recent one being Yogiri. The reason for why this happened is unknown.[17]
Abilities
- Instant Death Ability (
即 死 能 力 Sokushi Nōryoku?): Instant Death is Yogiri's ability to kill anything with a single thought. Although he usually says something like "Die" (「死ね」 "Shine"?) along with it, it is actually stated and shown to be thought-based on multiple occasions, and he can also activate it upon saying anything else, such as "You're the eyesore".[18] It has been noted that what phenomena occurs after he kills a target is dependent on Yogiri's cognition of death (for example, if a door's purpose is to block the way into another room, it only becomes logical that once the door dies, it will allow him to pass through)[19]. However, this is something that Yogiri does not actively do when using his power, as it occurs automatically. Despite the name Instant Death, Yogiri's death inducement is not necessarily instantaneous if he decides to not make it so, as there is some leeway as to when his targets can die, as long as they do die eventually.[20] Seemingly connected to the nature of Instant Death, Yogiri's perception of the world shows him any hostility directed at him or his allies, or just plain hazards, and he use that to track enemies he would not normally be capable of detecting, predict their movements/thought patterns, or automatically retaliate with the activation of instant death. Moreover, his ability is beyond fate and time itself, and was even able to kill an entity from a higher plane of existence,[21] who was beyond space and time altogether.[22] His ability does not follow logic[23] and transcends causality.[24][25] Izelda's analysis revealed that the boy's power is not magic or anything related,[26] and a staff member from the Institute noted that his power is limitless.[27]- "Half-Death" (
半 死 Hanshi?): Yogiri can restrict his power in such a way as to only kill parts of a given target, like specific limbs or organs of theirs. For instance, he may choose to eliminate someone's senses (looking, hearing, smelling), or their arms, legs, fingers, hands, etc.[28] Even if one cuts off the affected limb and tries to regenerate/heal it, said limb will still be affected by Yogiri's ability and thus not ever function again, no matter what the target does.[29] It should be noted that at the beginning of series, Yogiri was not fully capable of killing specific parts of the body, but he eventually learned how to do it by training with his powers.[30] - Immortality Negation: Yogiri is not only capable of killing anything, but he can also completely negate different types of immortality, such as resurrection,[31][32] regeneration, the state of people who are already dead,[33] and even targets to whom the concept of death does not apply.[34] Furthermore, even if the enemy resides in a different plane and uses avatars to attack Yogiri, he can reach the true form by killing said avatars.[35][36] His power is irreversible,[37] to the point where even time reversal was negated and couldn't bring his victims back to life.[38]
- Resistance/Immunity Negation: Yogiri's power is capable of completely bypassing immunity and resistance towards instant death abilities.[39][40] No matter how much defenses or resistances to instant death a person has, it is all meaningless in front of Yogiri.[41]
- Invulnerability Negation: Yogiri's power could kill Darian's invincible armors, which are not only invulnerable, but also neutralize all spells, prevent any sort of status ailment, and stop any attack element completely.[42]
- Soul Killing: Yogiri is capable of killing ghosts and spirits alike[43], which also includes souls, as seen when he killed the soul fragments in Chelsey's dolls[44] and Teresa's soul.[45][46]
- Inorganic Killing: Yogiri is able to kill inanimate objects, nature elements, and inorganic beings such as robots,[47] clothes, ice, wood, etc.[48]
- Data Erasure: Yogiri's ability has been shown to kill and destroy programs, such as the Judge.[49]
- Power Killing: Yogiri can kill the abilities of a target, effectively nullifying them.[50]
- Atemporal Killing: Yogiri is able to kill people even when it is not in real time, such as through video records in which he says "die" on it, being enough to actually kill an unrelated target if they happen to be watching said video at any point in time.[51]
- Curse Killing: Yogiri is able to kill and negate curses.[52]
- Microcospic Killing: Yogiri is able to kill germs, making him essentially impervious to diseases.[53][54] According to Yogiri himself, germs and viruses automatically die when they get near him.[55]
- Abstract/Semantic Erasure: Yogiri is able to choose what he will "kill", which includes how this can affect other objects/people or the environment. He can "kill" his momentum when falling to slow down his fall and land safely. He can also "kill" things based on his conceptualization. If he, for example, "killed" someone's memory of an event, they would lose that memory completely. If he decided to "kill" gravity, he could negate gravity either locally or planet-wide. He is capable of "killing" abstract phenomena and erasing concepts outright, such as time or space[56], as well as the laws/rules of entire realities.[57]
- Nonexistent Killing: Yogiri is able to kill nonexistent entities. This is seen when not even Rilna's nonexistent self remained after she was killed by Yogiri[58][59]. He can also kill beings that are purely hypothetical.[60]
- Metafictional Killing: Yogiri was implied to be able to kill the Question Corner (QnA sections) that the author makes at the end of each volume. According to Tomochika, this would likely result in the lack of other Bonus Short Stories for the next incoming volumes.[61] In addition, the Question Corner is stated to exist as a "mysterious space outside the novel".[62]
- Acausal Attacks: Yogiri's instant death ability has been stated to have no cause and effect relationships/connections. Even after gods and other transcendent beings saw Yogiri use his ability, they couldn't detect any kind of power being emitted or activated from him, and there was no causality attributed to it.[63][64]
- Assured Death: Yogiri Takatou's Instant Death ability can also target the source of any form of immortality, rendering it powerless and mute. Sion mentions that the philosopher's stone, which is the source of a sage's immorality, was rendered powerless after Takatou had killed the user of the stone.[65]
- "Half-Death" (
- Defensive Aspects:
- Automatic Defense: Even if the opponent is faster than what Yogiri can physically react, his powers activate automatically to retaliate before any harm is done to him.[66][67] It's stated that it doesn't matter how fast the opponent is, Yogiri's ability will always successfully retaliate[68] (this includes beings who can move at the speed of light[69], entities that can move through time via physical speed alone[70][71], and even creatures that are beyond time and space altogether)[72][73]. Even when he was a baby, Yogiri still had his automatic defenses[74]. According to the Ultimate God, it's also impossible to change/manipulate Yogiri's past, as his ability retaliates anyone that tries to do so.[75]
- Subjective Threat Detection: Yogiri's power can subjectively recognize certain types of abilities as "a threat" even if they technically do not do any physical harm to him, such as mental attacks, automatically retaliating against the enemy before the ability even affects him[76][77]. Later in the series, Yogiri started to consider forced teleportation as an attack, thus automatically killing anyone that tries to teleport him against his will.[78]
- Danger Detection & Black Lines of Death: Yogiri can sense and foresee any incoming danger that might harm him or his allies beforehand, being able to quickly kill the cause or just dodge said harm flawlessly.[79][80][81][82] Moreover, he can also see black lines/fogs on people or places, which indicates that there is potential danger involving them.[83] It is later explained that Yogiri does not detect only killing intent, but actually any potential harm to his existence.[84] For example, even when it comes to unintentional attacks, or attacks from a user that does not even know about Yogiri's existence, they are still automatically killed if it is a threat to him.[85] In addition, he is able to detect power sources from different dimensions and kill them there,[86] as well as detect people who have the power of being impossible to be perceived by any means.[87]
- Gates (
門 Mon?): Due to wanting to be as human as possible, Yogiri constantly restrains his power with seals — "Gates" that are locked within his mind. By imagining them opening, he can release more of his powers one by one. Each seal (when unlocked) leads Yogiri to a new "Phase" (段階 Dankai?), each one greatly amplifying his power. From the second seal and up, those doors would automatically close after a certain period of time. This proccess was set up to prevent him from accidentally destroying the world.[88]- First Gate (
第 一 門 Daiichi Mon?): When this gate is open, Yogiri becomes capable of killing anything (with a thought or automatically), can sense killing intent, and can foresee any incoming danger that might harm him. This is the standard Phase that is usually active at all times. - Second Gate (
第 二 門 Daini Mon?): When this gate is open, in addition of the powers from the 1st Phase, Yogiri's ability can now kill targets on a more abstract/semantic level. Yogiri has used this phase to kill his own momentum, falling energy, gravity itself, radioactive photons, wind, noise, and heat.[89] Additionally, he can use this power through the use of other people as a medium, being able to kill anyone/anything that his targets have ever seen from their memories,[90] as well as automatically killing anyone who tries to kill a certain person he has "marked" with this power, essentially protecting them.[91] - Third Gate (
第 三 門 Daisan Mon?) — Final Phase: This is the default state of Yogiri before he put any gate or restriction on his power when the organization asked him if he wanted to live a normal life. When the 3rd gate is open, in addition of the powers from previous Phases, Yogiri's ability can now kill anything and everything without limitation regardless of how complex the things he is going to kill, and likewise are capable of complex killing. Yogiri has used it to kill the connection/association/relationship between Great Sage Mitsuki and the universe (because reality is the dream of Mitsuki, killing him would end the world). As a result, Mitsuki is left utterly powerless without his omnipotence, as what is left of him is now just a consciouness completely disconnected from reality, becoming a being that existed solely to sustain the world while his physical body in the physical realm is put in eternal sleep and still breathing (but no longer active). It should be noted that Mitsuki can also be killed with Phase 1, as Phase 1 alone can kill any omnipotent beings or gods regardless of how high their plane of existence is or how powerful they are. It's just that killing Mitsuki with Phase 1 alone would result in a chain reaction that will destroy the world. Simply put, this Final Phase is capable of killing the repercussions and associations that would happen after the target is killed.[92][93]
- First Gate (
- Abstract Existence: The Yogiri that we know is only a shell, a vessel for an abstract being from a higher plane to interact with reality. No matter what kind of damage is done to Yogiri, it means nothing for his true form. It also seems to manifest against whatever or whoever tries to kill the vessel for good. Only part of its appearance has been revealed, and it alone is enough to drive targets to fear and insanity. Additionally, this true form exists since the beginning of all things and it is omnipresent across all of space and time in every multiverse.[94][95] Even after Darian used his Time Stop to try to kill Yogiri, the true form could still act in said time stop and kept Darian in check.[96][97]
- Final Destination: Yogiri is an existence beyond fate itself, and the end of all fates, as mentioned by Aoi. Even surpassing the fate power/amount of those who are considered high destiny-value existences, such as swordmasters or Vahanato. As seen with his "fight" with Aoi and Yukimasa, every destination and possibility leads to Yogiri's victory. He is the one who stands at the end.[98]
- The End of All Things: Yogiri's true form is the very nonexistence that represents the end of all things, something that no one could ever hope to surpass, and the final destination of all fate of which there is nothing beyond. Aoi stated that Yogiri's human form is the end of everything in the form of a normal person, further supporting the fact that his true form is something completely abstract and metaphysical. Against such a being, even Fate and Plot are less than a joke, similar to a disaster/calamity that cannot be fathomed.[99][100] As the embodiment of nonexistence that represents the End of all existence, The End of All Things stands beyond and outside the conceptual endless hierarchy of higher-level continuums and is even inaccessible to infinite higher dimensions, as The End can destroy all those things.[101] Even the UEG, one of the highest ranking multiversal gods and an extremely powerful god in her own right, is completely erased in the mere presence of The End of All Things.[102]
- Ultimate Ensemble Manipulation: Yogiri's true form is the one who defines the Ultimate Ensemble (the ultimate collectivity of all multiverses and all possible worlds[103][104]), which means that Its will alone is what creates and defines the totality of existences, and Its will alone that will end all of existences. This makes Yogiri far more important than Mitsuki, whose reality is his dream because Yogiri is allowing it to be so.[105]
- Nigh-Omniscience: According to one of the Facility's staff members, Yogiri's true form can not only peek into other people's minds but it is also getting close to omniscience.[106]
- Endless Void/Infinite Darkness: The Endless Void is a part of Yogiri's true form body. The mental image/conceptual source/consciousness of Gods or powerful omnipotent beings of higher planes of existence will be sent here when they become a victim of Yogiri's Instant Death. The Void is the personification of The End of Everything. And as such, no level of omnipotence works here, destruction does not exist here so it cannot be destroyed as space itself does not exist here, creation is not permitted here and every creation created here will instantly be vanished. Any beings thrusted into this oblivion are vanished into the empty blackness and melted into the darkness after unidentified amount of time has passed. But because the concept of time does not apply here, the physical body of the victim in the physical realm is already dead the moment they are subjected to Yogiri's Instant Death.[107]
- Homeostasis Maintenance: The true form always ensures that nothing gets in the way of its avatar's purpose of fulfilling a human life, neutralizing and eliminating any entity or concept that jeopardizes that.[108]
- Abyss Manipulation: Yogiri has been shown to perceive and manipulate the higher-dimensional Abyss at will, which is a structure comprised of 4 spatial dimensions + 1 of time, and such a dimension was stated to be only a fraction of Yogiri's true self.[109]
- Born-Again Immortality: Yogiri is able to live a hundred years, and after the death of his current Incarnation, he will be reborn as a baby. This cycle seems to continue endlessly.[110]
- Swordsmanship: Despite him still being not too strong physically, he has already learned some sword techniques and martial arts from Tomochika, and was even able to kill an average monster with just his sword.[111]
Weaknesses
Yogiri Takatou's instant death ability is something extremely powerful and unreasonable, so much so that there are only a few circumstantial weaknesses which cannot be conventionally exploited or relied on at all, the following which is:
- Yogiri does not automatically kills people he cares about, and may have to do it manually. However, he can change his parameters at any time to circumvent this.[112]
- Yogiri has a habit of sleeping and gets tired just as any normal human person the more he uses his power, which implies he cannot be awake for an indefinite amount of time. However, even while sleeping, his ability still automatically activates against any threat to his life.[113]
- When all of his Gates are closed (something that would require Yogiri himself to do), he is completely powerless and can be killed normally. He is able to freely open them at any moment, however.[114]
Feats
- Yogiri's true form is the End of all things. An embodiment of nonexistence that overcomes all others, and from which everything returns to after their end/deaths, of which there is nothing beyond, not even Fate and Plot itself, as those are also equally terminated in front of this calamity. Kouryu, an extremely knowledgeable god in regards to the cosmology of the multiverse, compared Yogiri to a natural limiter of reality, in which it is the inevitable end of the line that puts in check whatever god or entity that tries to destroy all of creation, ensuring its safety and balance, even if indirectly.
Etymology
- The name Yogiri means "night, evening" (夜) (yo) and "fog, mist, haze" (霧) (kiri/giri).
- Yogiri's surname Takatou means "tall, high" (高) (taka) and "distant, far" (遠) (tou).
Trivia
- Yogiri has a portable game console, which he uses to play his games occasionally.
- While Yogiri likes to play games ever since his childhood, he is terrible at them.
- Yogiri likes to play Monster Hunter, and he has also played Soulslike games.[115]
- Yogiri stated that he could never take on assassination quests in games.[116]
- Yogiri has never once caught a cold, since all germs and viruses automatically die when they get near him.[117]
- It was implied that Yogiri could kill the Question Corner (QnA sections at the end of a volume), which would result in the lack of other Bonus Stories for the next incoming volumes.[118] In addition, the Question Corner is stated to exist as a "mysterious space outside the novel".[119]
- Yogiri stated that he likes big boobs, but not too big. According to him, "there is always a limit".[120]
- Yogiri is not into flat girls.[121]
- Yogiri stated that he is not into humanoids that have animal parts, such as Shiro. According to him, it doesn't matter how nice-looking their human body is supposed to be, they all "lose their appeal" to him if they have any animal limb, such as rabbit ears and the like.[122]
- In a Question Corner from a bonus story, Yogiri stated that he would not catch the Coronavirus, but he was unsure if he could wipe all of it from Earth.[123] However, given that he has successfully killed Iselda, his statement could be dismissed as a contradiction.
- Yogiri stated that he could probably eat bugs, if cooked properly.[124]
- According to Yogiri, if he used his power on the Moon, it would indeed "die" but nothing much would happen afterward. However, he noted that if the Moon was going to fall into the Earth, it would explode after he kills it.[125]
- Yogiri was born with his powers.[126][127]
- In a hypothetical scenario of Battlesong being installed on Yogiri, he stated that he would like a simple power that boosts his physical stats.[128]
- "ΑΩ" (meaning Alpha-Omega) is a codename given to Yogiri by The Institute. Before his arrival there, he was called as "Lord Okakushi".[129]
- Yogiri is noted by others to have poor negotiating skills.[130][131]
- Yogiri has pretty good memory, but that only applies to things he makes a point to remember.[132]
- Yogiri is familiar with nuclear weapons, as he was targetted by them in the past.[133]
- Yogiri has pre-established criteria when it comes to killing. For example, aside from killing via self-defense, if the person is being violent or trying to rob him, he kills them as well. According to him, those are not the kind of things that normal people try to do, and going out of his way to spare someone who is willing to commit those types of crime without a second thought could cause trouble in the future.[134]
- Yogiri remembers everyone that he has intentionally killed.[135]
- Sion noted that Yogiri has killed 6% (sixty million people) of the population of the world he was transported into.[136]
- After receiving his world coordinates from Sion, Yogiri can in fact use his powers to go home by killing all the space and everything that exists in-between the isekai world and his home world, and creating a hole into his home world. However, this would also kill and destroy all the worlds and universes in-between the isekai world and his home world, because the isekai world is very deep in the celestial foundation hierarchy (which is why the standard of power in this world is very high), thus there will be countless worlds dying if Yogiri use his powers to return home. This is Yogiri's last resort to return home, which he decided to not use, because he thinks the primary usage his power is to protect himself and he does not want to justify the killings only to return home and carry such burden.[137]
